Mairie de Ferel

Férel, the perfect balance between coast and countryside

Férel: rural calm surrounded by great places to visit

The commune of Férel lies along 10 km of the river Vilaine with its rich maritime history. Those who take time to explore the network of paths and back roads, will discover a multitude of different environments – from the peaceful countryside along the river, through pine forests, moors and marshland.

Férel is close to the main road linking Nantes and Vannes. It is just minutes from the sea and within 30 km can be found the salt marshes in Guérande or Mès, La Baule, Saint-Nazaire, the Brière National Park, the listed “Petite Cité de Caractère” (little town of character) La Roche-Bernard and just a little further on, the Gulf of Morbihan.

Over the last 10 years, the population of Férel has greatly increased, but the town has still retained its rural and natural aspect. More than 3000 inhabitants live in 80 hamlets or villages around the commune.

The origins of the name

An ancient form of the name has not been found so it is not known where it comes from. It may possibly derive from the latin “ferreollum” meaning tin mine.

Férel, or Ferrel, appears in a late medieval manuscript and could be a patronym.

The Celts and the Romans inhabited the region.

There are a few vestiges: a menhir near Kérosten and a ruined dolmen.

The Roman road from Nantes to Brest crossed the river Vilaine at the village of L’iIsle.

Until 1747 Férel belonged to the parish of Herbignac. It was made up of 5 “frairies”.

At the turn of the 20th century the town was mainly rural. Traditional potteries were to be found in the villages of Le Guernet and Kernoïl. Vines were cultivated and produced a local wine,”noa”, which is now illegal due to its high alcohol content.
